How many units are in a glass of wine?

A bottle’s total does not tell you how much is in the glass until you know the pour size. Common examples for 13% wine are:

The difference between a 125 ml and 250 ml glass is a factor of two. At 13% ABV, two large 250 ml glasses use two-thirds of the bottle and contain about 6.5 units. The remaining 250 ml has another 3.25 units.

Home pours are difficult to estimate by sight, especially in a large or opaque glass. If you want a more reliable record, use a measuring cup or a marked wine measure occasionally. You do not have to measure every pour forever; a few checks can show whether your normal glass is closer to 125 ml, 175 ml, or 250 ml.

Why ABV changes the result

ABV is the percentage of alcohol by volume. It is printed on the bottle, usually near the back label or product details. Use that number instead of guessing from the wine’s name, colour, or price.

Compare two 175 ml glasses:

  • 175 ml at 11% ABV = 1.925 units
  • 175 ml at 13% ABV = 2.275 units
  • 175 ml at 14.5% ABV = 2.5375 units

For a 375 ml half-bottle at 13% ABV:

375 × 13 ÷ 1,000 = 4.875 units

For a 1.5 litre magnum at 13%:

1,500 × 13 ÷ 1,000 = 19.5 units

Sparkling wine, boxed wine, dessert wine, and fortified wine can also come in different volumes and strengths. Some fortified wines are around 17% to 20% ABV, so a small measure can contain a surprising amount of alcohol. Use the actual liquid volume and ABV.

How many glasses are in a bottle?

A 750 ml bottle contains:

  • Six 125 ml glasses
  • About four 175 ml glasses
  • Three 250 ml glasses
  • Three 250 ml glasses with no meaningful remainder

Those serving patterns are not equivalent:

  • Six 125 ml glasses of 13% wine = about 9.75 units
  • Four 175 ml glasses of 13% wine = about 9.1 units
  • Three 250 ml glasses of 13% wine = about 9.75 units

The totals only look different because of rounding and the amount left in the bottle. The practical point is that “a glass” needs a size. If your usual glass is large, logging one glass as one unit can undercount the alcohol.

What does a bottle mean for weekly tracking?

The UK Chief Medical Officers’ guidance says that if adults drink, they should not regularly exceed 14 units a week, spread over three or more days. A 13% bottle of wine is about 9.75 units, which is a large share of that weekly number. A 14.5% bottle is about 10.9 units.

The weekly figure is not a personal safety threshold, and a total does not describe every aspect of a drinking pattern. Drinking a large amount in one session can create immediate risks even if the weekly arithmetic looks acceptable. How many calories are in a bottle of wine?

Calories vary by wine, residual sugar, and serving, so unit count is not a complete calorie calculation. Alcohol itself provides energy, and mixers or sweet wines can add more. NHS guidance explains that one alcohol unit is around 8 grams of alcohol and about 56 kcal from alcohol alone. A 10-unit bottle therefore contains roughly 560 kcal from its alcohol before accounting for other ingredients or residual sugar.
