Mindful drinking means paying attention to when, why, and how much you drink, then making deliberate choices that match your goals. It can include drinking less, scheduling alcohol-free days, or choosing not to drink at all.

01

Choose a goal you can see

“Drink less” is difficult to evaluate. A visible goal is easier: three alcohol-free days this week, no drinks at home on weekdays, or a planned maximum for a specific occasion. Write the goal before the situation arrives, not while deciding on another pour.

NIAAA suggests deciding how many days a week you plan to drink and how many drinks you will have on those days. It also recommends keeping track and counting standard drinks accurately.

02

Design the environment around the choice

Notice the cue that usually comes before a drink: finishing work, cooking dinner, meeting a particular group, or feeling stressed. Then give that moment an alternative that is easy to reach. Stock an alcohol-free option, change the route home, plan exercise, or tell a friend about the goal.

  • Remove automatic refills by measuring each serving
  • Alternate alcoholic and alcohol-free drinks
  • Plan your last drink time before an event
  • Keep little or no alcohol at home if home drinking is a trigger
03

Track dry days without turning them into a verdict

A dry-day count is feedback, not a moral score. Use the calendar to ask what helped on successful days and what changed on harder ones. Weekly patterns are often more useful than an all-or-nothing streak.

Alcohol Tracker° shows dry days alongside drink history, units, cost, and calories so a goal stays connected to the broader pattern.

04

Know when to ask for help

Do not abruptly stop heavy or long-term drinking without medical advice, because withdrawal can be dangerous. If you are concerned about dependence, symptoms, medications, pregnancy, or a health condition, speak with a qualified healthcare professional. An app can organize information for that conversation, but it cannot diagnose or treat a condition.
