How to calculate beer units

Use the UK alcohol-units formula:

Units = volume in millilitres × ABV percentage ÷ 1,000

Use the volume printed on the can and the ABV written as a percentage. For a 440 ml can at 5%:

440 × 5 ÷ 1,000 = 2.2 units

For a 500 ml can at 5%:

500 × 5 ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 units

The calculation is the same for lager, ale, stout, IPA, cider, and other drinks. The result is a measure of pure alcohol, not a measure of taste, colour, calories, or how drunk someone feels.

Why “one can” is not one unit

People often count cans instead of units because cans are easy to see and remember. That can be a useful first step, but it hides the variables that matter:

  • A 330 ml can at 4% = 1.32 units
  • A 440 ml can at 5% = 2.2 units
  • A 500 ml can at 7% = 3.5 units

Those are all one can, but the strongest example contains more than twice the units of the weakest. If you drink four cans, the totals are about 5.3, 8.8, and 14 units respectively.

Beer calories are a separate estimate

Units and calories are related but not identical. Alcohol itself provides energy, and beer can also contain carbohydrates and other ingredients. A higher-ABV beer usually contains more calories from alcohol per serving, but the exact nutrition varies by product.

If calorie tracking matters, use the label when the manufacturer provides nutrition information. Otherwise, keep the volume and ABV in your record and treat calorie estimates as approximate.
