Two champagne flutes beside a bottle in a coral ice bucket on a terrazzo table

How many units are in a bottle of champagne? A standard 75cl bottle of champagne at 12% ABV contains 9 UK units, and at 12.5% it contains about 9.4 units. A 125 ml flute contains about 1.5 units. In US terms, a 750 ml bottle at 12% is about 5 standard drinks.

Champagne is usually a little stronger than prosecco, and celebrations make pours hard to track because glasses get topped up. This guide covers every common bottle size, glass size, and sparkling wine style, with the formula to check any label.

How many units are in a bottle of champagne, by size?

In the UK, one unit is 10 ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol. Most champagne is between 12% and 12.5% ABV.

BottleVolume12% ABV12.5% ABV
Piccolo (quarter bottle)20cl (200 ml)2.42.5
Half bottle37.5cl (375 ml)4.54.7
Standard bottle75cl (750 ml)9.09.4
Magnum1.5 L18.018.8
Jeroboam3 L36.037.5

A single 75cl bottle shared between two people is about 4.5 units each, roughly a third of the UK weekly low-risk guideline per person.

How many units are in a glass of champagne?

Flutes are narrow, so pours look smaller than they are. A standard flute holds about 150 to 200 ml when full, but a typical serving is 100 to 125 ml.

Serving12% ABV12.5% ABVServings per 75cl
100 ml (toast pour)1.21.37.5
125 ml (standard flute)1.51.66
150 ml1.81.95
175 ml2.12.24.3

A party where your flute is refilled four times with 125 ml pours adds up to 6 units, even if it feels like "a couple of glasses."

The difference between prosecco and champagne is about 0.75 to 1.1 units per bottle. If you drink prosecco more often, see prosecco units per glass and bottle.

The champagne units formula

UK units = volume in ml × ABV ÷ 1,000

US standard drinks = ml × ABV (as a decimal) × 0.789 ÷ 14

Example 1: a 75cl bottle at 12.5% (UK units)

750 × 12.5 ÷ 1,000 = 9.375, or about 9.4 units

Example 2: a 125 ml flute at 12% (UK units)

125 × 12 ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 units

Example 3: a 750 ml bottle at 12% (US standard drinks)

750 × 0.12 = 90 ml of alcohol; 90 × 0.789 = 71 grams; 71 ÷ 14 = about 5.1 standard drinks

The alcohol units calculator and the standard drink calculator run these formulas for any bottle or pour. For still wine glass sizes, see how many ml are in a glass of wine.

Does champagne get you drunk faster?

Some research suggests that carbonated drinks can speed up how quickly alcohol is absorbed, which may make the effects of sparkling wine feel quicker than still wine with the same alcohol content. The total amount of alcohol is still set by volume and ABV, so the unit count does not change.

Fast absorption and frequent top-ups make it easy to drink more than you planned. Alternating with water and keeping one glass at a time, rather than letting it be refilled, helps keep count.

Never use a units total or an estimate of how quickly alcohol is absorbed to decide whether you can drive. Plan a lift, taxi, or public transport before a celebration.

How champagne fits into the weekly guideline

The UK Chief Medical Officers advise that it is safest not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis, spread over three or more days.

Amount of champagne (12%)UnitsShare of 14-unit guideline
One 125 ml flute1.511%
Half a bottle4.532%
A 75cl bottle9.064%
A magnum shared by two9.0 each64% each

If celebrations cluster in one season, a few alcohol-free days around them can help keep the weekly total down. See practical ways to reduce alcohol intake for ideas.

Track every top-up

Alcohol Tracker° lets you log drinks by millilitres and ABV and keeps a running weekly total, so a refilled flute counts as another drink. You can [see Alcohol Tracker° for iPhone and Apple Watch](/) if you want a simpler way to keep count.
